The sensu fan, also known as the folding fan, was invented in the Japanese court between the 6th and 9th centuries to transport maps, prayers, calendars, letters and court announcements.
Carried along the Silk Road, exports of Japanese fans reached Europe and gained momentum. In the 17th century, Queen Elizabeth I of England can be seen in paintings holding folding fans. During the Victorian age in Britain, women created a fan language where different gestures indicated silent responses.
